04 May 2013 - Athersley Recreation v AFC Emley

Athersley Recreation, their final NCEL Division One game of a promotion winning campaign. With the season extended by a week due to the severe buildup of match postponements, this was a game when The Penguins from Sheerien Park, often dubbed "San Sheerien" could relax and take it easy. The visitors AFC Emley had in their ranks, Mark Wilson, who two days previously had made his 900th appearance in non league football. A 1 0 victory courtesy of a 70th minute Jason Bentley goal took Athersley Recreation to 85 points and runners-up to already promoted as Champions, Albion Sports.  Success breeds success and after two local grassroots finals in the week [with a third to follow], promotion in their very first season in the NCEL was the icing on the cake.

End Of An Era?
Mark Wilson [AFC Emley] leads the team off after completing over 900 appearances at eighteen clubs (needs verification)  in a non league career that saw him come off the bench and play for Emley at Upton Park against West Ham United in a 1-2 defeat in the 1998 FA Cup.

05 January 2013 - Cleethorpes Town v Athersley Recreation

Cleethorpes Town : The Owls
Ground sharing with Grimsby Borough at The Bradley Community Stadium, Grimsby.
2013 is their fifteenth anniversary.

Competition : Northern Counties East League Division One
Result : Cleethorpes Town 4 Athersley Recreation 0
Attendance : 190

The first part of this feature shows photographs from Cleethorpes Town home ground at The Linden Homes Club.  Once they have the ground up to NCEL standards, they'll return here to form part of the club which has thirty teams affiliated.

Cleethorpes Town, originally known as Lincolnshire Soccer School, were formed in 1998 by former Hull City and Grimsby Town player, Tommy Watson.  In 2010 the club merged with LSS Lucarlys to form Cleethorpes Town.  This is their first season in the NCEL Division One, after a successful application to join from the Lincolnshire League.

£62 for a "Dad & Lad" Season Ticket Offer.
A week later, Manchester City returned over 900 unsold tickets, costing £62, to Arsenal for their Premier League match at The Emirates Stadium.

Ticketing prices employed by clubs in not just the Premier League of English football are just one of the reasons why so many more people are saying "no more" and starting to follow the fortunes of clubs in the non league world.

Cleethorpes Town, have club sides from Under-7s to Under-10s (Mini), Under-11s to Under-17s (Junior), Under-11s to Under-13s (Girls) and also teams representing the club at Sunday League, Under-18 and Reserve League level.  All in all, thirty teams actively play under the name, Cleethorpes Town.

Athersley Recreation, situated in the S71 postal district of South Yorkshire, hail from Barnsley. Top of the NCEL Division One that day, a good crowd had made the 145 mile round trip to Cleethorpes Town, hoping to see their club move further ahead of the division.

Not even Fireman Sam can resue The Penguins today. A 0-4 defeat at the hands of one their closest rivals, the top of Division One gets tighter after every match.  Evidence further to show that clubs like Cleethorpes Town & Athersley Recreation are attracting supporters from an early age.

The army of travelling Athersley Recreation supporters that day, helped swell the attendance to 190. Second only that afternoon to the crowd at Scarborough Athletic, who sit top of the NCEL Premier Division.

Cleethorpes Town, emphasise their dominance by keeping Athersley Recreation at bay and go on to thrashing the team from South Yorkshire, 4-0.

Guinness World Records officially recognise Sandygate as The World's Oldest Football Ground.
The first competitive fixture took place here, on December 26 1860, 152 years to the day.

By half time at 3.45, the rain will have stopped.

There was a moment when the question was asked, "Has the ref called it off?"

"35 Minutes"

There are no tactics applicable when the rain falls and the match is abandoned.
Dinnington Town will return on Tuesday 05 February for a 19.45 kick off.

Two Photographs of the Same Goalpost.
There's an aesthetic beauty in something so simple as a goal post with the netting attached. There's stories that players could tell about this particular goal at Hallam FC. The architecture, shape and form, of such an object that is often unnoticed, taken for granted by those watching the game, the officials checking them before each kick off, the man/women who put up and take down after every game.  There's something unique about each one, not one are the same throughout the world.

"Nev"

A staunch Wednesdayite, who's followed his beloved Owls for years, the ups and downs, the highs and lows, seen legends in blue and white, travelled all over the country supporting his club. Today, The Owls were at Bolton Wanderers, which was designated as a Category A fixture. A ticket would cost Nev, between £28 / £32 to see Wednesday come back with a 1-0 win. One reason given by Nev that day, as to why he was at Hallam FC and not Bolton Wanderers.

Is the pricing structure at football league clubs driving away more supporters to non league football than they envisaged?

A Dickensian mist envelopes the stadium, soon Boxing Day will be over, the supporters left for home, the lights will be switched off for the final time in 2012. 2013 is around the corner, and Hallam FC, "The Countrymen" will still be playing at "The World's Oldest Football Ground"
